Old League Match Reports:

2006

3rd Match

The Men’s A team played their third league match missing their captain Adam Cox so entered the match at Avenue A expecting to have to fight to get points. And whilst they did have to fight very hard against determined opponents, both Victoria Pairs won their matches in 2 sets resulting in a fantastic 10-0 victory. Special mention to Jonathan Wilson who filled in for Adam and, along with partner Chris Wilson, put up a very strong performance particularly in beating Avenue's strong first pair. With some strange results in Div 1 already, this was an important victory. The Mens B team played exceptionally to pull off an 8-4 win at home to a strong Cheddar A team.  Victoria won both of their first round matches in 3 sets, with Andrew Pierce frustrating the opponents with some canny lobs in the wind.  Andrew teaming up with Eric Felton produced a convincing win in the second round to take the tie. Victoria C team were also, playing a Cheddar team, B. The match result was 6-4 to Victoria. Dan and Paul StQuintin fought well but lost in the first match and a very close second, where they lost the second set in a tie breaker. Ben Skinner and Les Doyle beat the first pair quite easily but after a break for heavy rain never played so well in the second rubber but still managed to win 6-3 6-2. The conditions were terrible, high wind and rain falling heavy from the first set to the completion of the match. The match was won by having scored 4 more games than Cheddar. In blustery winds and occasional showers the D Team won a close match against Blagdon A. Both pairs, Tom Clark/Bob Knifton and David McCrum/Beat Neukomm won one rubber and lost one. The score at the end was Victoria D 41 games and 6 points and Blagdon A 39 games and  4 points.

The Ladies A team, of Linda Hall, Rachel Davies, Charlotte Felton and Angela Tinnion were away at Avenue A.  On a blustery night against a strong young team they went down by 9 points to 3.  It was a very pleasing victory by 10 points to 1 for the Victoria B ladies playing their third consecutive match at home. A very blustery night saw first pair Carrie Skinner and Trish Alford beat both Avenue B pairs in straight 7-5, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-3 and second pair Debbie Earner and Ann Wheeler drop only one set against the Avenue second pair 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 beating the first pair 6-3, 6-3.The D team were away to Winscombe B who last season were two divisions above Victoria D.  On a very blustery evening with yet another line up the D team put up a good fight with one rubber going to 5-7 6-7.  Sadly, Victoria had to go home without gaining any points, however, they would like to thank Denise for her wonderful sandwiches which made the journey very worth while!

2nd Match

The ladies A-team of Charlotte Felton and Rachel Davies, and Linda Hall and Carrie Skinner went all the way up to Nailsea for their match this week and were able to secure a fantastic 10-1 victory. The four matches were hard fought but Victoria managed to win them all fairly comfortable not dropping too many games.  Victoria B team ladies were at home to Wrington A on newly sanded astro courts, which caused a few strange bounces at first but both sides soon adapted and a good evenings tennis was had by all. Both Victoria pairs, Angela Tinnon and Trish Alford and Judith Derbyshire and Ann Wheeler took the Wrington firsts to three sets - the scores being 5-7,6-3, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. The Wrington 2nds were beaten in straight sets by both couples 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2,6-1 respectively. A convincing win by 10 points to 2.  Week two of the summer league saw a different line up in the D team with Kelly Doyle partnering Charlotte Steele and Jan Yardley with Bernie Davies.  The opposition this week were Avenue D from Burnham.  It was the first time for many years that the teams had met and it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening’s play with long rallies with neither side backing down.  However, Victoria came out the victors winning 10-1.

The Men’s A team had what looked like a crushing defeat, yet was actually a close 10-2 loss to the league champions of the last 3 years, Clevedon. Alistair Felton and  Arthur Turner took both pairs to 3 sets (losing a tiebreak in the 3rd set to the second pair) and Adam Cox and Chris Wilson lost 6-4, 7-5 to the first pair and in 2 sets to the second pair concluding with a mammoth 14-12 tie break defeat, saving 8 match points in the process!  The B team of Eric Felton, Paul StQuintin, Jason Bateman and James Chapman had a difficult match on the unfamiliar clay courts against Bridgwater B. A couple of sets meant that 2 points were gained from the trip.  Victoria C played at home against Congresbury A. The Victoria first pair, Les Doyle & Ben Skinner, were in good form and won both their matches fairly easily. Their penalty for such efficiency was a long wait after the first rubber while the second pair, Andrew Peirce & David McCrum, fought for 2 hours to lose in a third set tie-break. Their second match followed a similar pattern losing on a tie-break in the third. However the overall result was an 8-4 point victory for Victoria C in their first completed match of the season.  The plaudits go to the D team who are now the only Victoria men's team with a 100% record. They followed up last week's win with a very impressive 9-3 victory at Avenue under the captaincy of Dan StQuintin.  With Bob Knifton they beat Avenue's first pair 6-4, 6-2 and their second pair 6-1, 7-6, having recovered from 0-4 and 15-30 with some brilliant shots and great rallies. Tom Clarke and Jamie George beat the second pair in three sets but lost in three sets to Avenue’s first pair in three sets.

 1st match

The new league season started this week for Victoria Tennis Club.  In division 1 Woodlands A against Victoria A in the past has always been a great match up and this one was no exception. For Victoria A's star junior player Alistair Felton just back from injury, it was business as usual as he and his partner Arthur Turner quickly won the first match of the season. Victoria's other pair consisting Adam Cox and Chris Wilson also managed a straight sets win against Woodlands second pair. Woodlands first pair however battled hard and managed to win both their matches in 3 sets giving Victoria the away win 8-4 overall.  The men’s B team made an emphatic start to the season in division 3; playing at home they beat Nailsea B by 10 points to 2. Eric Felton and Jonathan Wilson won both their matches in straight sets, and Ben Skinner and Les Doyle won both their matches in exciting three set matches. The C Team played Weston C but had to suspend play after 1 hour due to heavy rain which made the Home team consider their surface ‘dangerous’.  The D team won their match against Wedmore C. The players were: father and son team Paul and Dan St Quentin who won both their matches and Tom Clark and Beat Neukomm.

The Victoria A Ladies Team had a good win against Bridgwater B 8-5. Trish Alford and Linda Hall played as first pair had won a convincing 2 set match but were well matched in the other match narrowly loosing in 3 sets. The second pair of Louisa Cox (Captain) and Rachael Davies had similar fortunes winning one match in 3 sets and after a hard fight narrowly loosing their second in 3 sets. Overall an excellent start to the season.  The B team started the season against their keenest rivals Cleeve A. The synthetic surface at Victoria threw them initially but they soon got into their stride and every game became keenly fought. At the half-way stage it was one rubber each with both sides having conceded a set. Charlotte Felton and Judith Stone did well in the second half to beat the Cleeve seconds by 6 - 3, 7 - 6 in a tight tie-break but Angela Tinnion and Ann Wheeler couldn't match the Cleeve firsts and went down 0 - 6, 3 - 6. Rubbers and sets were now equal so it came down to a count of the games with Cleeve coming out on top by 50 games to 44. A close final score of 5 points to 7 was recorded.  The C team, of Judith Derbyshire and Charlotte Steele, and Lesley Pickup and Debbs Earner played late into the night, going down 3 – 8 to Wells B.

The Winter League has gone well playing through all weather conditions! Both the A and B teams gained promotion into the next division. The B team also won the division (3).

End of Summer Leagues 2005:

The Ladies B, C , and D teams all got promoted. Unfortunately the A team went down. The men's results saw the A team staying in the 1st division, the B's went down however the C's won their division getting promoted. The D team stayed in the same division. Well done and thanks to everyone who played!

2005

8/7/2005

Victoria A were unable to repeat the 9-2 win enjoyed in the home leg against Woodlands A. Woodlands out-played Victoria in the blustery conditions winning 9-2 reversing the score line from the first meeting. Thanks to results elsewhere in the league, Victoria A should now be safe in division 1. The team consisted of Adam Cox, Arthur Turner, Chris Wilson and Russell Landau.  The mens B team went down to Winscombe A by 8 points to 2 - Eric Felton and Steve Field managed one win and Jonathan Wilson and Steve Dowden came close, unfortunately going down 7-6 7-5.  The Mens D team of Paul and Dan StQuintin and Bob Knifton and Ted Bowles pulled off a vital win against Wells D.

The ladies A team including Sonya Sherwood won 7-4, benefiting from the unfortunate withdrawal of the Wells A 2nd pair due to illness during their second rubber.  Away at Wells the change of surface seemed to confound Victoria B's first pair who dropped the first rubber to the home team 3-6, 4-6. The second Victoria pair, Judith Derbyshire and Barbara Peakman, coped better with the high bounce and won both their rubbers although dropping one set to the Wells second pair. With the Victoria firsts beating Wells seconds 6-2, 6-4 a victory of 8 points to 3 was recorded.  In addition, the ladies B match against Lympsham A which was rearranged after thunderstorms caused postponement but the weather was still unkind enough to rain continuously for the duration of the rearranged match which resulted in another 10 nil victory for Victoria.  For the C team, Charlotte Felton unfortunately lost her partner, due to an uncooperative young spectator, and so had to concede two matches against Backwell A.  The D team have had rather mixed fortunes over the last couple of matches.  Their postponed match away at Weston was played on Saturday with a brilliant result with them winning all the 10 points available;  however Tuesday did not go so well,  but the 3 points won may well prove vital when the league finishes in two weeks.

30/06/2005

Victoria Men's A ended up loosing 4-6 in a very hard fought match against Bridgwater A. Because of missing A team regular Arthur Turner, Victoria had
to take from the B Team squad in the form of Eric Felton who played superbly helping the A team to a well deserved 4 points. With only 3 games left this season, Victoria A will be pushing for a good win next week against Woodlands A to ensure 1st division tennis next summer, although they will be without their junior star player, Alistair Felton. This weeks team consisted of Adam Cox, Eric Felton, Chris Wilson and Alistair Felton.  The B team were away at Nailsea B and put in a strong performance, taking the match 8-2.  Regulars Russel Landau and Jonathan Wilson were joined by Steve Field and Paul StQuintin.  Victoria C's strongest line-up of the season were too experienced for Avenue D; the 10:0 scoreline being compensated by a very welcome early pint on a sweltering night.  The D Team consisting this week of Bob Knifton+Peter Derbyshire, David McCrum+Beat Neukomm lost 7-4 against LympshamB.

There were no ladies matches this week due to thunder storms.

25/06/2005

Victoria Men's A regulars, Adam Cox, Arthur Turner, Chris Wilson and Alistair Felton scored the first double win of the season with a 8-3 win over Wells A. Chris and Alistair clinched the win with a very impressive performance against the Wells 1st pair after loosing the first set, they stepped up a gear and went on to win the second and third sets easily (6-0, 6-1). With 8 more points in the bag, Victoria A should be confident of 1st division tennis next year.  The B team of Eric Felton and Jonathan Wilson, and Russel Landau and James Chapman played well but went down again, losing 8-3 to Avenue A.  The C team maintained the momentum into the 2nd half of their season; after a catastrophic 1st set (6-0), Andy Martland and Ben Skinner won 3 of their next 4 sets; while Gavin Jones and Tom Clark went from strength to strength winning both their
matches in 3 sets to give Victoria C a 9-4 victory over Wedmore B.
Bob Knifton+Ted Bowles, David McCrum+Pete Derbyshire took on Congressbury, in a hard fought match which Victoria D lost 8-1

A harsh lesson for the ladies A team was dished out by Bridgwater A this week, which resulted in a 10 - 0 loss.  In their longest match to date, with closure after 10.30pm, Victoria ladies B team notched up their sixth consecutive win against Wedmore B, away. The 9 points to 3 were hard earned with the Wedmore first pair taking both Victoria pairs to three sets. Only two games separated the teams but Victoria had three rubbers and an extra set.  The ladies C team continued their strong run with a 10-0 win against Weston A.  The D team were at home to Cleeve B for another long hard battle with one rubber being incredibly close.  Jan Yardley and Charlotte Steele are claiming the decisive winning set over Cleeve after an incredible come back from 0-5 down to winning the set in a tie-breaker. The final points were 7-4 to Victoria.

18/06/05

Despite an encouraging effort, it was more of the same this week for the Victoria ladies A team, who lost by only 2 games to Bridgwater B.  The ladies B team continued their winning run with another 10 nil win over Cheddar C ladies at home. This week they were joined by Charlotte Felton who helped towards the straight sets victory - Cheddar only managing 17 games to Victoria's 48. At the halfway stage Victoria B ladies have only dropped 3 points and currently stand at the top of the league table.  There was a win for the C's against avenue - both pairs winning 2 rubbers but Victoria C gaining that additional set, to give them a 7-4 win.The D team were home to Wells and after a very long evening and with more deuces and tie breakers than they would like to remember Victoria were disappointed with the 2 points they gained.

The Victoria Men's A team returned to winning ways with a 10-2 win over Weston A. The result may mean a jump back up from 4th to 2nd in the 1st division depending on results elsewhere. The season is now half way through and if Victoria A can repeat the results in the reverse fixtures they will be looking at the best finishing position for many years.  The B team had a close match with Clevedon B, with Jonathan Wilson and James Chapman winning both their matches, unfortunately the B team lost the match overall by just 2 games, 7-5 on points.  The D team of Dan St Quentin and Bob Knifton, David McCrum and Beat Neukomm took on Wrington B at home and after another long match won 8-5. Both pairs won 2 matches, but Victoria D won one more set which clinched the tie.

15/06/05

The new tennis season kicked off with some epic matches for Victoria Club.  The Mens A match against Wells A in division 1 was a tense affair. Andrew Peirce and James Chapman provided the result of the night winning a lengthy thriller 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 whilst Alistair Felton and Chris Wilson overran both sets of opponents in quick time. Result - a good start for Victoria winning 8-3. The Mens B team found it tough, going down 10-1 away to Avenue A.  The C team faired better winning their match against Wedmore B by one set, with county veteran, Ted Bowles, and Bob Knifton taking the key set in the near dark.  For the Mens D team, father and son pair, Dan and Paul St. Quentin, teamed up with Peter Derbyshire and Beat Neukomm and managed to win 7-4 in Congressbury. It was a long match, finishing at 9.40pm, with both pairs winning one match it was decided on a final third set in the last rubber.

The Ladies A team were away to the 2004 league winners, Bridgwater A in their first fixture. The overall result was a 10 - 1 loss, included a marathon match against Bridgwater's 2nd pair, which was lost 7-5 5-7 5-7 after 2 and a half hours.  With all players on form the Ladies B team made a good start in division 4, and were delighted to have beaten our old rivals and friends Wedmore B at home by a spectacular 10 points to nil.  The D team were away at Cleeve for their first match. Hilary Sage with Kelly Doyle and Charlotte Steele with Jan Yardley, who made a much welcomed return to the side after a year away through injury, were very pleased with their two set advantage which resulted in a 8 -4 point victory.

Victoria Tennis club welcomes new members, social play is Sunday mornings 10 till 12.

27/05/05

In this week's round of matches in the North Somerset Tennis League the Victoria Mens A team continued there impressive start to the season in division 1.  Regular's Adam Cox, Arthur Turner and Alistair Felton were joined by Alistair's father Eric to record a 9-2 win over Woodlands A.  Whereas the B team continued to find if difficult going in division 2, going down by 2 points to 8 to Winscombe A.  The welcome return of Alan Whitehouse playing with Gavin Jones helped to give the C team an 8-2 win after a tough battle with Wells C.  Ben Skinner and Les Doyle continued in winning form.  The D team of Peter Derbyshire, Ted Bowles, David Mc Crum and Beat Neukomm played against a well organised Wells D, in a long and close match they only managed to win 2 sets, going down by 10 points to 2.

The Ladies A team continued to find it tough in division one, losing their match against Wells A.  Wells B ladies put up a spirited opposition to Victoria B ladies at Street but the home team still recorded a 9 points to 2 win. Second pair Angela Tinnion and Ann Wheeler lost in three sets to their opposite number 6-4 3-6 2-6 but managed to beat the Wells first pair in straight sets 6-4 6-3 thereby ensuring a third decisive victory.  The C team also performed well winning their match at Backwell. The D team were at home to Cheddar and it had been quite some time since they had played each other.  It was a tight match with the teams ending up with 2 rubbers each; exactly the same number of games but Cheddar came out with a set lead and went home with a 7-4 win.

20/05/05

Victoria Tennis Club - win, lose and draw!

The latest round of Victoria club ladies tennis matches were played on a beautiful still evening. Although the Ladies A team lost to Cheddar-A by 2 points to 8, all the matches were close, hard fought and played in a competitive but sporting manner.   The B team were at Lympsham and proved too strong for the home team. Helped by Sonia Sherwood, regulars Carrie Skinner, Angela Tinnion and Ann Wheeler recorded a second 10 nil victory by 48 games to 10.  The C team did almost as well at Congresbury, recording a convincing 10-1 win.  And not to be out done the D team were at home to Weston B and had another fine victory.  Hilary Sage with Kelly Doyle winning one of their rubbers 6-0 6-0.  Jan Yardley and Sally Lewis also had a two set victory in one of their rubbers with Jan, having sustained a nasty injury, stoically playing on for two games to secure the second set.

The Mens A team were away against Bridgwater A.  Victoria were in confident mood after the previous weeks win against Wells-A but were shown how good the standard is in the 1st division with both the 1st pair of Chris Wilson and Alistair Felton and the 2nd pair of Adam Cox and Arthur Turner loosing in straight sets against the Bridgwater A 1st pair. But thanks to two convincing wins against the Bridgwater 2nd pair the scores were close, in fact even on game count-back there was nothing between them so the match was drawn 5-5!  Overall a fair result but Victoria will be looking to win home leg.  The Mens B team had a similar score-line against Nailsea-B, but this time game count was in their favour so the points went 6-4 to Victoria.  The Mens C team of Bob Knifton, Ben Skinner and Les Doyle were augmented by Eric Felton, and were too strong for Avenue-D, taking the points 10-1 with just one set dropped in the match.  The D Team consisting of Dan and Paul St. Quentin and David McCrum and Beat Neukomm were beaten by Lympsham-B  8-3.   The team fought hard but were outplayed by Lympsham's 1st pair.

New members of all standards are welcome at Victoria Tennis club - come along any Sunday morning, 10 till 12, to join the action.

18/05/05

Victoria Tennis Club

Victoria A's winning run came to a sudden stop with a 10-0 loss at the hands of last years division 1 champions, Clevedon A. Victoria team consisting of Adam Cox, Arthur Turner, Chris Wilson and Alistair Felton tried everything but could not make any impression against a very strong team. In any event, some excellent tennis was played and enjoyed by all involved and Victoria will be looking to bounce back next week, away against Weston A. The B team faired little better against Clevedon's B team in division 2.  Eric Felton and Jonathan Wilson won one rubber but the match was lost 2-9.  The C team welcomed Andy Martland to their side for the first time this season.  He and Gavin Jones comfortably disposed of the second pair, but narrowly lost a tight game in the next match. Ben Skinner and Les Doyle, whilst being someway below their best, came from behind in both their matches, resulting in a winning score of 8-2 for Victoria C. The Men's D team lost 8-3, despite a crowd thrilling win from Bob Knifton and David McCrum, who saved at least ten match points in the process of winning their first match in two tie breaks.  The pair had little left for their second match; but second pair, Ted Bowles and Paul StQuintin put up a strong fight despite having to sit waiting the first match for so long.

The ladies A team lost out to Woodlands A by 3 games, after the match had finished equal on rubbers and sets.  The B team ladies met their stiffest opposition to date in Avenue C ladies at Burnham. Not a good start with one member forgetting her tennis racquet resulting in a 1-6 first set score using a borrowed racquet. With the arrival of the regular racquet the second set was won by 6-4. Hopes were raised for a third set victory but it wasn't to be, 3-6 being all the first pair could manage. The 2nd Victoria pair also lost in three sets to the Avenue firsts but with both Victoria pairs beating the Avenue seconds it was 2 rubbers apiece. Even though Avenue had one game more (49 games to 48) the two extra sets scored by Victoria meant an 8 points to 4 victory for the away team.  A narrow miss from the C team with the scorecard equal on rubbers and games but we lost on sets thereby conceding 4-7 on points. Another long one finishing at 10.00pm.
The D team were away to Wedmore C, the league leaders.  Kelly Doyle and Hilary Sage put up a tremendous fight having three tie breaks in their two rubbers with one going to 16-14!  Even with most games being very close and with several deuces being played out, Victoria had to go home with only one point in their pockets!

2004

4th July

A disappointing round of matches saw all four ladies teams losing this week.  The A team went down 8-3 to Nailsea A, wit1h Rachel Davies and Charlotte Felton making a first appearance for the As.  The B team also lost to Nailsea B 10-0 in a much closer match than the score.  Although losing, the C team gained a valuable 4 points.   The D team were at home to Woodland B and true to form it was an incredibly

tight match.  With each pairing, Anne Tomlins with Charlotte Steele and Kelly Doyle playing with Pam Tomlinson, winning one rubber each in two sets and then loosing their other rubber in the same fashion it was down to counting games yet again!  Woodland came out the victors by just one game giving them 6 points over Victoria's 4.

The Men faired much better winning all their matches.  The A team had an unusual look because of the absence of three regular players, but they still recorded a good win at Nailsea A, with James Chapman and Andrew Pierce winning both their matches.  The B team of Eric and Alistair Felton, and Jason Bateman and Russell Landau also won convincingly against Nailsea, beating their B team 10-1. The C team of Ted Bowles and Ben Skinner, and Steve Dowden and Gavin Jones travelled to Chedder to gain a convincing 10-1 victory. They need just 4 points from their remaining 2 matches to be certain of promotion.  The D team’s opposition came from Brent Knoll. After a well fought match Victoria was victorious by 7 points to 4.  Father and son pair Paul and Dan St Quentin played well winning their match against the second pair easily and taking a set against the first pair. The D Team now need 12 points from their last 2 matches to be certain of promotion.

The Road to Wimbledon

Local Street tennis junior, Alistair Felton, is on his way to Wimbledon.  The ‘Road to Wimbledon’ tennis tournament is run nationally for players aged under-14.  Following club qualifying tournaments, each club winner met at Taunton over the weekend to contest in the County finals.  In blustery weather Alistair played consistent and attacking tennis to get passed Matthew Bettles from Taunton in the semis.  He than faced Peter Hoyland from Minehead in the final.  Peter played some intelligent tennis to push Alistair all the way, but Alistair’s greater weight of shot won him the match 7-5 6-3.  Alistair will now represent Street and Somerset at the week long National finals at Wimbledon in August.  In the girls event Olivia Howlett from Bridgewater beat Kerry Matthews of Burnham, and will be going to Wimbledon for a third consecutive year!

The B team had a reversal in fortune going down 10-1 on the Clay courts at Bridgwater.  But the match was closer than the score suggests with Les Doyle and Andrew Pierce losing two tie-breaks; and Jason Bateman and Russell Landau staging an impressive fight back from 0-6 0-2 down to take a set.  The Mens C team lost their unbeaten record going down 4-8 to second placed Cleeve B, with the experienced, Ted Bowles making an appearance.

Despite some tight sets the Mens D team recorded another convincing 10-0 win against Winscombe C.  The players were the regular team of Beat Neukomm and Alan Whitehouse, and David Walton and David McCrum.

As at Wimbledon, the weather affected the Ladies matches on the Tuesday, with all four matches cancelled.

10th June

The Mens A and B teams both had matches against the top teams in their respective divisions, 1 and 2.  The usual A team of Adam Cox, Arthur Turner, Andy Gall and Chris Wilson put up a brave fight against an excellent Clevedon team currently in an awesome unbeaten run. Victoria eventually loosing the match 10-0 with the compensation of an earlier bar visit than usual.  The B team did exceptionally well with a win over the previously unbeaten Weston A team.  Father and son pair, Eric and Alistair Felton, won both their matches and James Chapman and Andrew Pierce winning one for an 8-3 score.

The Mens C and D teams both had matches against Avenue teams.  The C team, of Bob Knifton and Ben Skinner, and Jason Bateman and Russell Landau, gained a maximum 10 points.  The D team hadn’t quite finished their match when the flood lights went out at 10pm, with the last game poised at 5-3 in the 3rd set in favour of Victoria. The point score stands at Victoria D 9 points, Avenue F 2 points.

A very successful week for the Ladies. The A team had a convincing 10-1 win against Wedmore A with Carrie Skinner and Louise Gall winning both matches in straight sets.  The B team also had a good win, 8-2 against Wrington A with Ange Tinnion playing exceptionally well. The D team were away to League leaders and undefeated Brent Knoll A.  With their fourth line up this season the D team were again all square at the end of the match with the all important games tally to count.  Victoria came out 7 games ahead, giving them a 6-4 victory.

28th May

On what can only be described as the most perfect summer's evening, this weeks Ladies fixtures produced some long hard fought matches with very late finishes. The A team beat Winscombe A by one set, winning 7-4. The B team lost to Cleeve A, 3-9 with three of the four matches going to three sets. The C team beat Wedmore 9-3 with Lesley Pickup and Janet McHugh winning both matches. The D team are making a habit of extremely close contests, this week against Backwell B.  With each partnership winning and losing one of their rubbers, it was down to counting the games.  Victoria came out the victors by just two games, 38-36, so gaining 6 points to add to this season's tally.

After an unbeaten run stretching over 2 years, the Men’s A team finally lost a match against a deserving Woodlands team. Adam Cox and Arthur Turner scraped a 3 set win against the second pair while Chris Wilson and Andy Gall won in straight sets. Woodland first pair proved too strong, winning both rubbers resulting in a 4 points to 7 loss.  The B and C teams both won their matches gaining a maximum 10 points each.  Jason Bateman and Alistair Felton, and James Chapman and Andrew Pierce won for the B’s; and Bob Knifton and Andrew Martland, and Les Doyle and Ben Skinner won for the C’s.  The D team had a good win over Blagdon A. It was a closly fought match with 3 rubbers going to 3 sets. After over 3 hours of play the home team won by 1 set.

22nd May

This week Victoria and Nailsea came head to head in both Mens and Ladies leagues. The Ladies A team had a disappointing result losing away to their A team 8-3. The Mens B were also away and faired even worse, losing 10-1, letting slip a couple of close tie-breaks.  But in the other two matches Nailsea gifted Victoria 10-0 wins by conceding their Mens A and Ladies B matches.

The Ladies C team had a closely fought match with Clevedon B, but lost by the odd
set, gaining 4 points. The Ladies D team were away to Woodland B in Weston, with their third different line up in as many matches. They had a very frustrating evening against an experienced team who kept on getting the vital points.  Kelly Doyle played with Anna Graham and Hilary Sage with Charlotte Steele, who in their second rubber, without floodlights, peered through the darkness to win in three sets and gain what may well be a valuable 2 points at the end of the season!

The Mens C team were convincing winners against Chedder C with Bob Knifton and Les Doyle, and James Chapman and Andrew Pierce winning all their matches without dropping a set. The Mens D team had a good win over Brent Knoll B, winning 9 points to 2. Alan Whitehouse and David Walton easily won their matches. David McCrum and Beat Neukomm were steaming ahead winning theirs, but came a cropper in the second set tie brake of the second match, loosing it after leading 5-2. The third set also went to the steadily improving opposition.

14th May

Victoria Tennis Club (Street) Men's A continued their winning start with maximum points against Avenue A. Andy Gall and Chris Wilson were comfortable winners in both matches and Adam Cox and Arthur Turner won two very tight matches both in 3 sets, resulting in a 10-2 victory.  Whilst the B team narrowly lost to Bridgewater A, the Cs won narrowly against Cleeve B.  The Mens D team had a convincing 10-0 win over Winscombe.

The Ladies A team didn't finish the match at Woodland. A combination of an unfinished marathon match between the 1st pairs and bad light meant no result. The B team were at home to Avenue B and certainly made maximum use of the floodlights – their very tight match running well into the night.  Unfortunately when the score was added up Victoria found they had lost by just 2 games.  The C team beat Weston A 10-0, with special mention going to Jan Harding and Pearl England.  The ladies D team were at home to Priory A.  They were very keen to do better this year having been beaten by Priory on both occasions last season.  Hilary Sage and Anne Tomlins were reunited after an eighteen month break and had a fantastic victory winning both rubbers in straight sets.  Kelly Doyle and Charlotte Steele had more of a marathon with both matches going to 3 sets, winning one of their rubbers. So with an overall victory of 9 points to 3 it was a successful evening.

30th April

Victoria Tennis club (Street) made a successful start to the new season with the first round of matches in the North Somerset league.  The Men's A team, having been promoted last season to the first division, beat local rivals Wells 9-2, with Adam Cox and Arthur Turner winning both their matches.  The Men's B and C teams could not have made better starts to their seasons, beating Avenue B and Woodland C respectively both 10-0.  The 'B' team consisted of James Chapman and Andrew Pierce, and Ben Skinner and Les Doyle; for the C team Eric and Alistair Felton played, along with Bob Knifton and Russell Landau.  The D team had a long match narrowly losing it 7-4.

All the Ladies teams were involved in close matches.  The A team in Division 2 beat Cheddar B by just one set, with Ann Wheeler and Carrie Skinner winning both their matches.  The B team had an equally close match against Eastover Park A, losing by just one set.  Victoria C team ran out of daylight so didn't get their match finished.  But the closest match of all was Victoria D losing to Wells D on game count-back by just 2 games; Charlotte Steele and Hilary Sage winning both their matches.
